Starting and Charging Systems Service
How the Systems Work
The starting system includes a battery, starter motor, solenoid, ignition switch and in some cases a starter relay. An inhibitor (neutral safety switch) is included in the starting system to prevent the engine from being started if the vehicle is in gear.
When the ignition switch is turned to start position the battery provides current to the starter through the relay and solenoid. The starter engages a gear to a flywheel gear on the back of the engine and turns the engine over. The battery also supplies current to the ignition system which supplies spark to the plugs and ignites the fuel which causes the engine to start.
The Charging system includes an alternator (generator), drive belt, battery, voltage regulator and the associated wiring. After the engine is started and running, the alternator takes over as the source of power and the battery becomes part of the load on the charging system. The alternator supplies current back into the battery to keep the battery charged.
All the components are connected; a problem with one component can affect another component in the system. For example: an alternator that is defective and over charging can damage the battery.
